Application Performance Monitoring vs. Network Performance Monitoring

If your organization relies on an IT infrastructure (and what organization doesn’t today?), application performance monitoring and network performance monitoring are key terms that should be on the radar of the IT staff.  Organizations rely heavily on technology and expect the network to be up and running efficiently at all times.  Network downtime really isn’t an option.  Instead of having a reactive approach to a network or system failure, performance monitoring solutions can alert the IT staff to a potential issue causing a slowdown or bottleneck and the issue can be resolved and the network up and running quickly.

Application performance monitoring focuses on monitoring the performance and availability of software applications.  Application performance monitoring solutions detect, diagnose, and report on application performance issues to ensure that the application works properly and meets the expectations of the end-users of the application.  Application performance monitoring solutions report on how fast transactions are completed or information is delivered to the end-users through a network.  Application performance monitoring solutions measure the resources used by the application and the end-user experience to determine whether the application is performing properly.  End-user experience is measured by monitoring the volume of transactions going through the system and the response time of the application.  The experience of the end-user is a critical component of application performance monitoring since it is the most valid way to assess application performance.

Network performance monitoring functions the same as application performance monitoring but on a broader scale since applications run on the network.  In order for applications that are used by end-users to function properly, the network itself must be performing properly.  Within a network there are several factors that can affect functionality regarding the transmission of component parts.  Delay can happen when a component part is delivered across networks.  Due to errors such as overloading, component parts can be lost which results in retransmission which causes delays.  When these errors occur the network can become unusable or slow and application performance suffers.

Both network performance monitoring and application performance monitoring software are critical components of IT infrastructure monitoring today.  An application performance monitoring tool ensures that software applications are running smoothly while a network performance monitoring tool ensures that the network overall (and therefore applications within the network) are running smoothly.

Businesses today need immediate access to a network and the applications running within that network at all times.  System downtime just isn’t an option.  When work is disrupted due to system failure it means that productivity slows which means that projects aren’t being completed and deadlines aren’t being met.  It’s not worth the risk in today’s fast paced business environment.  Utilizing application performance monitoring and network performance monitoring solutions within an organization will increase productivity and efficiency resulting in improved revenue for the organization.
