7 Steps To Server Success

META's  Best Practice Steps

What are 7 steps, according to META Group, that you can use to significantly improve your service management strategy? Here is a brief summary of two:

1. Measure What Matters

First, you must understand which metrics are important – and which are not – in assessing true performance. There’s a common tendency to focus on a few metrics (the trees) without seeing the whole performance picture (the forest). A limited view leads to undetected performance problems that result from IT not being able to effectively pinpoint the true cause of performance problems.

To get a clear picture of real performance bottlenecks, you must first let the purpose of the device you are monitoring decide what metrics you analyze. Once you’ve identified what metrics are meaningful, you can look deeper into the data to assess true performance.

2. Set Meaningful Thresholds

Too often, IT departments use out-of-the-box monitoring software settings without taking the time to find the correct threshold for their unique server environment. Inaccurate thresholds can lead to false alerts that are often ignored.

As your server environments change over time, so should their associated thresholds. Treat thresholds as an iterative and ongoing process to ensure applicability. If your monitoring software has the ability to set dynamic thresholds, all the better.
